The plain-English briefing

What is a Demand Letter?

A Demand Letter formally asserts a claim and demands resolution: the facts, the legal or contractual basis, the amount or action demanded, a deadline, and the consequences of ignoring it. Typical uses: unpaid debts, unreturned deposits, breached contracts, and property damage.

Many small claims courts expect — and some require — a written demand before filing.

Why it matters

A serious, well-organized demand letter resolves a striking share of disputes without court: it shows you're prepared, creates evidence of notice, and gives the other side a face-saving exit. If you do end up in court, the letter is Exhibit A of your reasonableness.

Fair questions

Demand Letter questions

No — self-written demand letters are standard, especially for small claims-sized disputes. Attorney letterhead adds pressure for larger claims but isn't required for the letter to work.
Firm, factual, and unemotional. State facts, cite the obligation, demand the remedy, set the date. Threats beyond what you'll actually do undermine you later.
10 to 14 days is customary — enough to be reasonable, short enough to show resolve. Send it by a trackable method so delivery is provable.
Yes. Your answers shape the sections and language of the final document — including your parties, terms, and where relevant your state — so you're not left editing a generic template.
Your finished document downloads as both a polished PDF and a fully editable Microsoft Word (.docx) file, professionally formatted and ready to use.
