The plain-English briefing

What is a Bill of Sale?

A Bill of Sale is a receipt for the transfer of ownership: it records that a seller sold specific property — a vehicle, equipment, furniture, livestock — to a buyer for a stated price on a stated date. It typically includes a description of the item, its condition, and whether it's sold as-is or with warranties.

For vehicles, many states require or expect one at title transfer and registration.

Why it matters

After a private sale, disputes and paperwork problems land on whoever can't prove what happened. A signed bill of sale documents the price for tax purposes, the as-is condition against later complaints, and the transfer date that ends the seller's responsibility for the item.

Fair questions

Bill of Sale questions

In many states, yes — it's required or strongly recommended at registration, alongside the signed title. Even where optional, it protects the seller from tickets and liability after the sale date.
It means the buyer accepts the item in its current condition and the seller makes no promises about future performance. Stating this clearly is the seller's main protection in used-goods sales.
Most states don't require it, but a few do for vehicles. Both parties signing — each keeping a copy — is the important part; add notarization if your state or DMV asks for it.
Yes. Your answers shape the sections and language of the final document — including your parties, terms, and where relevant your state — so you're not left editing a generic template.
